Decorative books

Use book stacks to add height, soften a shelf and give smaller accents a place to belong.

A THOUGHTFUL START

Choose with your space in mind

Decorative books can bring a loose arrangement into focus. Start with the surface you are styling, then decide whether a horizontal stack or an upright group will make it easier to use.

Keep favorite reading books in the mix. A display feels more personal when the objects have a reason to be there.

Beige and brown linen book boxes with white lettering bring a warm, understated accent to shelves and coffee tables.

Choose the stack for the surface

Check the width and depth of each book against the shelf or table. Keep the whole stack supported, with no corners projecting into a walkway. On a small side table, two books and one low accent may be enough; a deep shelf can accommodate a taller group.

Mix directions with a purpose

Use upright books to give a shelf structure and a horizontal stack to introduce a lower line. Leave a visible break between groups. Choose covers that relate to one other material in the room rather than trying to make every spine identical.

Keep useful storage accessible

If a decorative book opens for storage, leave room to lift its lid and avoid piling fragile objects on top. Check the listing for internal dimensions and construction before choosing what to keep inside. A styling suggestion is not a promise of storage capacity.

A few helpful answers

Good to know

How many books should I stack?

Start with two or three and check stability. The top surface should be level, and anything placed on it should sit entirely within the cover.

Can I mix real books with decorative books?

Yes. Repeat a color or texture across the group, while keeping books you read easy to remove.

Will storage books hold my remotes?

Compare the stated internal dimensions with your remotes. External book dimensions alone do not tell you how much usable space is inside.
